Clearly, you wouldn’t hire a computer programmer without testing that she could cost.  You wouldn’t hire a secretary who couldn’t type.  So, if you are hiring for your accounting team, surely you should be equally focussed on ensuring that you hire candidates with the appropriate accounting, bookkeeping, numeracy or software skills to deliver?

I hope not.  However, it happens all the time, ad that’s why hiring managers are increasingly turning to skills testing software to evaluate the ability of accountancy staff.

Typically online assessments for accounting include a variety of bookkeeping tests, designed to evaluate how candidates perform in more entry-level roles.  Tests for candidates who will be involved in delivering the payroll and far more specialist online accountancy tests designed to assess the ability of a candidate to use products such as Sage 50.

It’s often also worth checking the numeracy and literacy of a potential candidate.  An accountant needs to understand the rules, but also be aware of how to communicate them.  Producing a balance sheet is no more important than being able to explain one!

These are all examples of hard skills.  A candidate either knows how to use Sage, or she does not.  However, there are also a wide variety of softer tests that hiring managers and recruiters will ask potential candidates to take.  These cover areas like reasoning and persuasion.

Finally, there is psychometric testing.  There’s no point in hiring a great accountant if he or she is not able to get on with colleagues or clients.  Psychometric tests are used to help a hiring manager to understand how well a potential candidate will fit in with the wider team.

The cost of a bad hire can be huge.  A bad choice in your accounting department can cause an organization with significant pain.  Ensure you make a good hire by testing potential accounting hires before offering a contract!
